Cat Breeds

Classification of Cats by Types and Sizes

Currently, it is estimated that there are more than 70 breeds of cats, many of which are not yet recognized by the Fife. The greatest diversification of breeds occurred in the last century, and one of the ways to classify cats is by their size.

1. Hair Free Breeds

In the last 10 years, breeds of hairless cats have gained popularity. Although they lack hair on much of the body, they have a thin, barely noticeable fluff. The Egyptian Cat or Sphynx and the short-legged Bambino are prominent examples. These felines not only facilitate the cleaning of the home by not letting go of hair, but are also known for their loving, docile, tame personality and their dependence on the human being.

2. Hairy Breeds

Furry cats are distinguished by having long, abundant, fluffy fur, especially on the neck, body, and tail. Native to the Middle East and Persia, some popular breeds are the Persian, Angora, Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Sacred of Burma and Forest of Norway. These felines are not only visually shocking but also often have a relaxed and affectionate temperament.

3. Breeds and General Characteristics

Cats are subdivided into two large groups: the breed and the mestizos. Breed cats meet specific physical characteristics, supported by a pedigree detailing their family tree up to four generations back. Mestizo, Creole or common cats do not have these specifications.

4. Quantity of Breeds and Recognitions

In 2020, the CFA recognized 44 breeds of cats and the FIFe recognized 43, although it is estimated that there are more than 100 breeds in the world. These international organizations are in charge of recognizing the races, establishing standards and classifying them into families.

They are known for their varied color, medium size and robust health as they are not prone to specific diseases. Their presence in homes and streets is a testament to their resilience and adaptability over time.
